Q. Who would be eligible to be a member of TEA?

Tufts University employees who work on the Medford, Boston and Grafton campuses and get paid by the hour are likely to be eligible for TEA. The union would include staff who do administrative and clerical work, research support, patient care and animal care. Many, many titles are included – here are just a few examples: Staff Assistant, Research Technician, Dental Assistant, Veterinary Technician, and Library Assistant.

Some hourly employees would not be included for a variety of reasons. Some people are already members of other unions. Some people work so few hours that they are not eligible for benefits. A small number of hourly employees may not be eligible to be in the union because they are truly supervisors. TEA organizers are happy to speak to any member of the Tufts community about whether they are eligible for the union.

As we are organizing our union, we are also getting to know folks who are part of other constituencies at Tufts, such as faculty, exempt staff, and students. While these groups are not eligible to be in TEA, we believe that we have a lot in common, and look forward to working together on our shared goals.

Q. What is TEA doing now?

We are meeting and talking with all of the employees at Tufts who would be eligible to join TEA. We’re having many, many conversations across the three Tufts campuses. Some of those conversations are about the concrete details of what TEA would be like. Many more of them are getting-to-know-you conversations, building relationships and deepening connections.

Q. Do I have to make any decisions about TEA right now?

There’s a lot to learn about this union, and that takes time. You don’t have to decide what you think about having a union at Tufts yet. Building TEA is about building a community among our co-workers, so getting to know each other is the first step. We believe that you can’t have a healthy organization without strong and positive relationships between people.

At some point down the road, when most of the staff feels comfortable with and supports the idea of TEA and the people involved, there will be a union vote. For now, we want people to get to know one another and to learn more about the idea of our union.
